Whiskey Trail
The Whiskey Trail
Vertical Drop: 290m.
Distance 3.6km.
Rating: Advanced (with a several Expert moves).
The Whiskey trail has seen many changes over the years, and in it’s current incarnation exhibits a mixed personality.
A short, challenging climb begins the trail and leads to the padding up point. The first section of the descent is known
as Whiskey on the Rocks, where a sequence of rock slabs and bluffs test your bike handling skills. The middle and lower
sections are mostly fast, sinuous single-track, peppered with stunts and jumps and the occasional rock slab, which empties
onto the Railgrade for a quick ride back to town or parked vehicle.
Historic Fact: The Whiskey trail, once known as Smuggler’s was used as a route for smuggling Whisky into the USA
during prohibition, although less than 25% of the current trail utilizes the original route.
Directions
On the drive from Rossland, watch for the parking area on the Railgrade, just off Gelez Rd, about 500m past Drakes Rd
intersection. Leave a vehicle here if shuttling. Ride (it’s about a 45 min climb) or drive to the top of Malde Creek Rd, a rough
gravel road. After four switchbacks and just past the turnoff to Birch main (gated) the road flattens and the signpost
to Whiskey can be found on the left. The Whiskey trail ends on the Railgrade where you turn left, back to your car, or
continue back to Rossland.
